Fellowship of the Unashamed

Once again more time has passed between posts than I would have liked, but life can get busy. It seems that we blink our eyes and days, weeks and months have passed and we are left wondering where the time went. It is hard to believe it is almost November. Even through this busy stage of life, God is continuing to teach me and I would like to share something He reminded me this morning.

My wife and daughter went out for the morning so I decided to listen to a podcast by Tullian Tchividjian. His message was based around his book Jesus + Nothing = Everything which is basically a study through Colossians. There were many things he said that I would love to share here but I want to focus on just one part. Towards the end of his message, he shared this “poem” that though I have heard it many times before, it inspires, challenges, refreshes me every time I think about it and read it. Here, read it for yourself:

I am a part of the fellowship of the Unashamed. I have the Holy Spirit Power. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I won’t look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still. My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure. I am finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tame visions, mundane talking, chintzy giving, and dwarfed goals.

I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits, or popularity. I don’t have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded. I now live by presence, learn by faith, love by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power.

My pace is set, my gait is fast, my goal is Heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions few, my Guide is reliable, my mission is clear.

I cannot be bought, compromised, deterred, lured away, turned back, diluted, or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

I won’t give up, back up, let up, or shut up until I’ve preached up, prayed up, paid up, stored up, and stayed up for the cause of Christ. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I must go until He returns, give until I drop, preach until all know, and work until He comes.

And when He comes to get His own, He will have no problem recognizing me. My colors will be clear for “I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes..” (Romans 1:16).”

Dr. Robert Morehead has shared the story of where this actually comes from. This poem, if you want to call it that, comes from a young believer in Rwanda over 30 years ago. He was forced by his tribe to either renounce Christ or face death. This is a common occurrence around the world for people who make the choice to become a follower of Christ and this young man refused to renounce his faith in Christ and as a result, was murdered. The night before, he had apparently taken time to write out this “commitment” he had made to Christ. This young man stood firm in his faith and paid for it with his life. It seems as though he had come to the same realization as Paul in Philippians 1:21 – “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

I am asking God to give me the same boldness this young man possessed and that the words in this poem/commitment, would be true of my life. I want to be a part of the fellowship of the unashamed. What about you?
